CHAPTER THIRTY

HE DID BAD THINGS

“JAYNIE, I NEVER KNEW HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS HOUSE and this apartment,” Geraldine let Aubrey take one arm and Jayne the other as they helped her into her easy chair in the living room. “Oh, and the courtyard. How I have missed the courtyard. I cannot wait to get out back with a glass of champagne.”

“Whoa, there, MamaG. I think we’d best take it a little slow, don’t you? Believe me, I’ll keep the champagne on ice.” Jayne laughed. “Now tell me what I need to get in here for you? I’ll go grocery shopping.”

“You will not, Ms. Jayne. You know how I love to cook too much and freeze my week’s dinners. Pull me out some gumbo and I’ll microwave that when I get hungry. I have plenty of everything. Don’t you worry about me now. I know how busy you all are. I am home. Thank god I am home.” Geraldine’s voice wavered and she blinked back tears.

“Yes, ma’am. You are home and we all feel so blessed. Okay, we’ll leave you alone, but I’ll be checking on you nonstop. And I know how you will hate it, but I got a phone for you.”

Jayne had bought a prepaid cell phone and she handed it to Geraldine.

“Now Jayne…” Geraldine started to protest.

“I won’t take no for an answer. I have my number already programmed in. This is the button you push to get me.” She showed Geraldine how to work the phone and said, “I don’t want you pounding on the ceiling. You hear me? I mean it.”

Geraldine was about to refuse and then she stopped herself. Instead she started laughing. Her giggles were infectious and soon Aubrey and Jayne joined her in a good laugh. Geraldine wiped her eyes and said, “Well, Jaynie, you’ve been after me forever to get a phone so I guess you got your wish. Okay, hon, I hear you and I promise I will use it. Now go get me my purple beret out of the closet. I love my little tam from Benjamin but I am in the need of a change to shake off that hospital.”

Jayne found the hat and watched as Geraldine placed it carefully on her head. A smile washed over Geraldine’s face transforming her into a younger woman. Jayne watched in awe. “Just look at you.” She leaned over and kissed Geraldine on the cheek and just that quick she and Aubrey left the apartment.

When they were gone and she was alone Geraldine leaned back in her chair and took a deep breath and smelled the air. The old furnishings in the room had their own scent, sweet spice and roses. It was her fragrance. It smelled like home. I am home. She shouted into the air. “I am home!” A rush of feelings flooded her mind and heart and Geraldine’s recent laughter turned into sobs. She didn’t hold back and let herself cry. How she had needed a good cry.
